Betty Louise (Tootle) Fleischman, age 60, passed away Wednesday, Nov, 5, 2008, while in hospice care at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center. Her last moments were spent in peace, surrounded by friends and family as she went into the arms of her Lord. Betty grew tired, although never defeated, during the final days of a long (and miraculous) five-year battle with ovarian cancer. Even though her body began failing, her will and spirit remained strong, inspiring absolutely everyone that came to know her. Betty was born in Key West, Fla., on April 8, 1948, to Kermit Henry Tootle and Earline "Granny" Cowart Tootle. As she was born premature, she was a fighter from the start. Her first two months of life were spent in Key West Hospital before finally being permitted to go home to be with her mother, father, and big sister, Barbara. The family later moved to Perry, Ga., where she began elementary school. In January 1955 they relocated to what they would call home, Fort Walton Beach, Fla. Once there, she attended Pryor Junior High School then Choctawhatchee High School. She met Robert "Bob" Allen Fleischman (who she would come to know as her "one and only") while attending Pryor Junior High. In fact, by her senior year at Choctaw, in quite short order, she had already committed to spend the rest of her life with him. They were married on Betty's birthday shortly after graduation and began what would be an indescribably beautiful lifetime together. They had two children, Patricia "Trish" Lynn (Fleischman) Keeney and Paul Anthony Fleischman. Both Patricia and Paul fulfilled Betty's wish to be a proud Grandma, giving her Brendan Fleischman (14), Mason Couch (11), Christian Keeney (12), Carson Keeney (10), and Charlie Keeney (8). Betty's good heart and spirit will be passed on to her grandchildren, keeping her love of life alive always. Betty was the most genuine, sincere, caring, selfless, spunky and loving woman to the many family and friends who were fortunate enough to know her. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, who passed away in March 1998. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Keeney and her husband Sean (along with her "grand-youngans" Mason, Christian, Carson and Charlie); her son, Paul Fleischman and his wife Jaclyn Fleischman and "honorary first grand-youngan" Brendan Fleischman; her mother, Earline (Tootle) Tennes; her sister, Barbara Allen and James Allen (her husband), Buddy Allen (nephew), and Jessie Allen (great-niece); her brother-in-law Michael Fleischman, (aka her guardian angel), and Debbie Fleischman (his wife), Lisa Fleischman (niece) and her child, Dallas Fleischman (great-nephew, aka her grandson-by-choice), Carrie (Fleischman) Odom (niece) and her husband T.J. Betty is also survived by two additional brothers-in-law, Jack Fleischman and Leon Beach; as well as a sister- in- law, Lani Marie and her husband, Don. A viewing for family and friends will be held on Sunday, Nov. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Emerald Coast Funeral Home, 113 Racetrack Road N.E., Fort Walton Beach, Fla. A memorial service and celebration of Betty's life will be held on Monday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m. at Wright Baptist Church, 795 N.W. Beal Pkwy., Fort Walton Beach. Burial will follow at Beal Memorial Cemetery. In memory of Betty and her faith in Christ, you may also make donations in her honor to her church families - Wright Baptist Church, 795 N.W. Beal Parkway, Fort Walton Beach, FL 32547; and Destin First Baptist, 201 Beach Drive, Destin, FL, 32541. The family would like to express their gratitude for the love, care and support of family, friends and the community. We are also especially thankful for the loving care given by the many physicians and nurses over the past several years. Emerald Coast Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. You are encouraged to share memories and sign the guestbook at www.emeraldcoastfuneralhome.com. |

Larusso, Joseph June 3, 1933 - Nov. 3, 2008 My husband, Joseph LaRusso, was 75 years old. He died on Nov. 3, 2008, supporting a political candidate he believed in by waving signs at University Parkway and Lockwood Ridge. Regrettably, he was hit by a car crossing the street at the end of sign waving. He died, like he lived his life - supporting things to which he was committed. Joe and I bought our home in Sarasota 19 years ago. We moved here permanently in 1994. As a formally trained dancer and community theater actor, he loved arts and culture. We moved to Sarasota primarily because of the arts. He was a wonderful and dedicated husband for 40 years, a wonderful father to his daughter and a wonderful friend to many. He was intelligent, funny, compassionate and committed to giving back to his community. He was the best of us. He loved golf, which he played for many years, but his real passion was tennis, which he discovered later in life and played five days a week up until the day he died. Joe was a hospital administrator by profession with such notable hospitals as Bellevue Hospital Medical Center and Montefiore Hospital in New York. He also managed several private psychiatric hospitals in Westchester, N.Y., and was the executive director of the Yonkers Family Services Society. Upon moving to Sarasota, he wanted to give back to his new community. He was president of the board of directors of TheatreWorks, a volunteer at the BackLot Theatre, and a volunteer with Sarasota Ballet - Dance the Next Generation. He was past president of the board of directors of the Mental Health Community Centers and vice president of sports with Sarasota Sister Cities Association. He was loved and admired by his wife, his family and his many friends. He is survived by his wife, Sophia LaRusso; his daughter, Laura Vann-LaRusso; his son-in-law, Richard Vann-LaRusso; his grandson, Matthew Nicholas Vann-LaRusso; his brothers, Anthony LaRusso and Michael LaRusso; his sisters, Rose Smith, Anna Undello and Marie Zugnoni; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Margaret and Charles Johnson; his mother-in-law, Grace Givens; and his many friends. Joe lives on in his family and the countless people and organizations he touched. His star shines down upon us from the universe. He will be cremated and his ashes returned to his beloved hometown, Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Donations in his honor can be made to the Mental Health Community Centers, 204B S. Tuttle Ave., Sarasota, FL 34237. |
