BATES, LEONARD G. age 87, passed from this world in the early morning of May 28, 2009 in Orange City, Florida. He leaves behind his wife, Ethel, his children, Leonard, Jr. of Texas and Barbara of Florida, his grandchildren, Emma, Jenny, and Jesse (all from Texas), and his brother Herbert Wendell Bates (of Ohio). Leonard was born in Bismarck, ND in 1922. He was fortunate to have had a wonderful and exciting life, filled with adventure, health, and happiness. He met Ethel when they were both teenagers in Kentucky, and neither of them ever looked at anyone else ever again; they were soul-mates and lovers till death parted them, and, I believe, beyond. Leonard survived the Great Depression, during which he learned the value of the dollar, and World War II, during which he served his country as both a musician in the USO shows, and as a cargo pilot in Asia. Although he flew many types of aircraft in many locations and earned many awards, Leonard primarily flew the cargo plane, C-46, achieving the distinguished title of "Hump Pilot". He was one of very few pilots during the war to fly over the Himalayan Mountains between Burma (now Myanmar) and China. Following his years in the Unites States Army Air Corps, Leonard had many jobs, but eventually pursued a career in the food industry of General Foods (now Kraft). He achieved the titles of "General Regional Sales Manager" for both Baker's Chocolate and Bakers Coconut, for both the southern and western regions of the United States. [One could say that he had the jobs of four men.] He retired from General Foods in 1977, after 25 years of service. Following General Foods, Leonard was offered and accepted an opportunity to work for one of his brokers. He began another career with Mr. Edgar Marx of Marx Brothers, Inc. in Birmingham Alabama. He was promoted by Edgar Marx, in a mere three years, from salesman to the position of Vice President of the corporation. Leonard retired from Marx Brothers in the late 1990's, and eventually relocated to Deland, Florida where he and his wife could be close to their daughter. Leonard, being very rarely ill, was diagnosed with dementia in 2004 and began a long, hard, and heart-breaking battle for his life. He was able to maintain his personality, sense of humor, and love for his "gal" to the very end of this battle. Leonard was the best husband and father a person could ever be blessed with; I know, because I am his daughter. I love you, Dad. See you later. |

Linda Jean Chrysler was born in Starke, Florida on June 30, 1959. On May 18, 2009, her life on this earth ended. She was predeceased in death by her son, Nathaniel Stephen Avera and her father, Dr. V.W. Strickland, Jr. She is survived by her husband, Darold Chrysler, her son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Brittany Avera, her mother, Bobbie Strickland, two brothers, Danny and Donald, her aunt, Marie Lee, and numerous nieces and nephews. For nearly 50 years, Linda lived a life that was full of compassion and concern for those around her. She often said that she believed her biggest role in life was to be a loving mother. She fulfilled that role well and those who worked with her, went to church with her, and lived with her all felt her motherly touch in their lives. Linda would often tell her family stories of how she prayed for those she worked with that they would get through the personal struggles in their lives with peace. She had many special connections with younger people and she always made them feel comfortable around her. They knew she was genuinely interested in their lives and well-being. Linda did the best she knew to base her life on the love of Jesus. Her faith shined brightest in her battle with cancer. She told her family that if someone could understand better who God is because of her battle, then it would be worth it. Linda's life was simple, yet left a profound impact on those who knew her well. Her faith led her to love so many people and she did that in an extraordinary way. As we grieve the loss of Linda we hold onto a theme that carried her through the ups and downs of her own life, "One Day at a Time." Our lives were better for knowing Linda and we will miss her dearly. Visitation will be at Carey Hand Colonial Funeral Home on Wednesday May 20, from 5-7 p.m. The funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church of Orlando in Henry Chapel on Thursday May 21 at 10:30. Internment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. It was Linda's request that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to TGen Foundation, One Arizona Center, 400 E. Helen Churchill Oakland, CA Helen Knowles Churchill died on Thursday, March 19, 2009. She was 89. During her lifetime, Mrs. Churchill wore many hats: wife, mother, nurse, cap tain in the Army Air Corps. Whatever she did, she did with full vigor and to the best of her ability and always seemed to end up "in charge," a characteristic that stood her in good stead as she raised her daughter and five sons. While she probably would be surprised to hear herself described as a pioneer, indeed, she was. Upon her retirement as a captain from the Army Air Corps following World War II, she was among the highest ranking women to have served in the armed serv ices in World War II from her home state of Florida. Mrs. Churchill was born in Missoula, Montana on May 23, 1919, to Virgil Wesley Knowles and Mabel Odneal Knowles, and grew up in Miami, Florida. She became a registered nurse at Jackson Memorial Hospi tal (now Jackson Memorial Medical Center) in Miami, and soon entered the Army Air Corps, where she served as a flight nurse during World War II, and was retired from service as a captain after being disa bled. In 1946, she married the late William J. Churchill, of Locust Gap, Pennsylva nia, a Major in the Army Air Corps, and with him raised six children, while they relo cated the family three times as Mr. Churchills job responsibilities changed. She retired as Director of Nursing at the Jewish Home for the Elderly of Fairfield, Connecticut (at the time, a 240-bed nursing facility) in 1986. After her retirement she moved to Melbourne, Florida, in 1987, where she served as a nursing and long-term care consultant at the Indi an River Colony Club. In 2001 she relocated to Oak land, California, and took up residence at the Salem Lutheran Home. Mrs. Churchill is survived by six children, William, Virginia, Thomas, Stephen, Paul, and Allen; eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a niece and nephew, and two grand-nieces and two grand-nephews. Funeral services will take place in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors, on June 19, 2009 . Eldon Leroy Clark, a former Boeing electrical engineer who played a role in the first manned flight to the moon, died June 2 at a Plant City retirement home.Clark, who was 88, was never as famous as the three-man, Apollo 8 crew he helped place in orbit around the moon in December 1968. The astronauts, Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Anders, were the first humans to see the far side of the moonClark was Boeing's chief electrical engineer at the time and he worked at the company's New Orleans plant. He helped design and install the electrical system for the Saturn V first-stage rocket engine that took the crew into space. His wife, Madge, said he was proud but didn't talk much about his work on the project."It was very exciting. Eldon didn't talk about it much, other than what was in the newspapers. But when Apollo 8 was orbiting the moon I remember us sitting outside staring at the moon; trying to see more than we could see," she said.Clark died in his sleep at Stone Ledge Manor, near Antioch. He and his wife had lived in the assisted living facility since October."We knew his time was near," said Marcia Miller, Clark's daughter. "The family spent all day Monday with Mom and Dad. He was resting comfortably, but he was happy and glad we were there."Clark was born in Virginia, Neb., where he attended the lone high school there, and Peru State College, also in Nebraska."I was a freshman in college when Eldon and I first met," said Madge Clark, his wife for almost 68 years. "For me it was love at first sight. He was a sweet and beautiful man. I loved him dearly."Madge Clark was raised in Hamburg, Iowa. After finishing high school she went to Peru to get a teaching degree."Eldon and I were married June 26, 1941," Madge recalled from her suite at Stone Ledge Manor. "Then Pearl Harbor was bombed by the Japanese and our world was turned upside down."Madge didn't finish college, but took a teaching job in Wichita, Kan., were she moved with Eldon, who finished his senior year at Kansas State University. He received an engineering degree there. Their daughter Marcia was born while they lived in Wichita.Eldon soon joined the Army Air Force and was trained to fly B-17 and B-24 bombers.During his career Clark worked with Beechcraft, but moved to Boeing in the 1960s.Following the Apollo contract, Clark moved with his family to Seattle, where he worked with Boeing on the design and construction of a hovercraft for the military. Twenty years ago, the couple moved to St. Petersburg to be near their daughter, Marcia, who with her husband, John Miller established Marjon Specialty Foods on Sydney Road. Ten years ago, the Clarks moved into a house in Walden Lake. The Rev. Joe Bowles, pastor at Shiloh Baptist Church, where the Clarks attended, called him a "remarkable man" at a June 5 service at Wells Memorial Chapel."He was more witty, intelligent and sharper than all of us in this room ? at least in my circle of friends," Bowles quipped. "Most importantly, Mr. Clark knew where he was going in all things."He may never have gone to the moon, himself. But now he has travelled past the moon, and we must trust in the all knowing God that Mr. Clark is with him now."Clark is survived by his wife, his daughter and her husband, grandchildren April Miller and Amy Tucker; and five great-grandchildren. |

COOPER, Victor Marquis, 26, went to be with the Lord March 1, 2009. Marquis was born March 11, 1982 in Mesa, Ariz., to Bruce and Donna Cooper. He was raised in Gilbert, Ariz., and graduated from Highland High School in 2000. Marquis attended the University of Washington, earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in law, society and justice in 2004. While in Seattle, Marquis was a proud member of the Husky football team, where he played four years as a linebacker and was a member of special teams. Marquis married Rebekah Kristine Dunn April 2, 2006, and was a proud father to their daughter, Delaney. An avid animal lover, Marquis considered their two Boston Terriers, Hercules and Dori, and their many saltwater aquarium and pond fish to be part of their family as well. Marquis regularly attended Church at the Bay in Tampa, where he was involved in the "Frat House" and occasional softball games. As a child, Marquis always dreamed of playing professional football, and with the support of family and friends, realized that dream when he was drafted to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a linebacker in 2004. Marquis completed five seasons in the NFL, playing for the Buccaneers, Vikings, Steelers, Seahawks and Raiders. Marquis was especially proud to be a part of the Oakland Raiders, which was his favorite childhood team, and greatly anticipated becoming a major contributor to their defense in the 2009 season. Marquis lived up to a favorite family quote, "It' s not how you start, it' s how you finish," by spending his last season as an Oakland Raider, where he received multiple game balls while earning respect from his coaches and teammates. Marquis' competitive nature extended off the field to his true passion for fishing. Any chance he was given to be on the water, Marquis loved to "fight the fish." As a result, family dinners and fish frys typically included Marquis' catch of the day, and preparing new seafood recipes became a family tradition shared by Marquis and his wife. In addition to spending time on the water with fishing buddies, Marquis was especially proud of watching his daughter share his love for the outdoors, and found nothing more rewarding than helping Delaney reel in fish from the neighborhood pond or favorite fishing holes in the bay. Marquis will always be remembered for lighting up any place, on land or sea, with his trademark smile. Though his time here was short, Marquis' life was marked by friendships that spanned time and distance, and his presence and story became a gift to many. No one shared more fully the blessing of Marquis' life than his wife and daughter, who he fondly referred to as "his girls." Marquis cherished relationships with his loving parents, sister, in-laws, and cousins as the greatest joys in life, and was defined by his love for family. He is survived by his loving wife and daughter, Rebekah and Delaney Cooper of Tampa; his parents, Bruce and Donna Cooper of Gilbert, Ariz.; grandmother, Norma Washington, of Mesa, Ariz.; grandparents, Joseph and Zelma Davis of Phoenix, Ariz.; sister, Donielle, of Gilbert, Ariz.; in-laws, Harlan and Barbara Dunn, of Wapato, Wash.; sister-in-law, Jordan Arreola, of Wapato, Wash.; sister-in-law, Meghann, and brother-in-law, Johnny Gomez, and nephew, Hunter Gomez, all of Wapato, Wash.; as well as numerous other aunts, uncles and cousins. All are invited to attend a celebration of life service honoring Marquis as a husband, father, son, brother, teammate and friend. The service will take place at 3 p.m. June 20, 2009, at Central Tampa Baptist Church, at 2923 N. Tampa St., Tampa, FL 33602. |
